A Chronic Conditions Crisis.
It is estimated that 500 million people globally are affected by chronic disease. Those are unbelievable numbers. The prevalence is rising rapidly in rural, lower income populations, where most cases remain undiagnosed or receive delayed diagnosis.
So many of us have chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. And even if not, most of us know friends and family members that do.
Now imagine areas that don’t have access to basic healthcare services. That is where The Root Cause works. Our calling is to continue to bring essential healthcare solutions to communities with chronic conditions that need it most. And help them build a sustainable ecosystem where they can help each other thrive.

Yet it Rarely Makes Headlines.
What makes this disease particularly devastating is that diabetes has proven to be a highly manageable disease – if diagnosed early and provided appropriate treatment.
Sadly, most people who live in underserved communities around the world lack access to the basic medical care and education critical to the screening, treatment, and prevention of diabetes. And the same can be said about high blood pressure.
Our Model of Care + Capacity Building
The Root Cause has developed a proven approach to working in high risk, rural communities with a focus on improving the health of individuals dealing with chronic conditions. Our holistic model includes partnerships with key stakeholders, churches, and other safe harbor locations.
We use a comprehensive methodology that provides a series of critical assessments, related to social determinants, general health and disease severity, self-efficacy, mental health and spiritual determinants.
We believe in building community capacity and providing opportunities for individuals living in these communities. Caregivers that are developed from within are uniquely positioned to be a trusted companion, impact health, and connect individuals to the variety of resources available in their areas
Interventions are individualized and caregivers’ frequency of interventions depend on the results of the comprehensive assessments
The Root Cause uses digital platforms to collect data at point of screening and follow-up care. Our approach allows us to have real time data to forecast how each individual needs to be addressed, while ensuring complete privacy protections.
The Root Cause has developed trusting relationships and partnerships with key churches and safe harbor locations. For those living in high risk communities, the church setting is where most locals seek solace and support.
We have proved that this setting can provide the disease identification, care and follow up needed to improve health and eliminate unnecessary hospital visits. Our success has been in the training and deployment of church community members to be caregivers.
Their role is to connect with individuals, collect assessment data, teach self-management and connect them to vital community resources and healthcare.
A thriving community is defined by physical, mental, spiritual, and financial health. Beginning in 2026, we will equip and train the people we serve on ways to sustainably use natural resources as agribusiness entrepreneurs to produce food items and generate income. Providing the education and experience to become vital, self-sufficient communities that care for each other.

Ms. Raina Avalon serves as the Executive Vice President, Chief Logistics Officer for The TJX Companies, Inc. in Framingham, MA. Since joining, she has led the improvement of end-to-end supply chain, built strategy & analytics capabilities, while driving efficiencies to deliver greater value to TJX. In addition, Raina is a Co-Executive Sponsor for HoLA, the Hispanic Associate Resource Group at TJX, designed to create a place for the TJX Hispanic community to connect.
Prior to joining TJX, Raina resided in Houston, TX, and worked as the Vice President of Logistics for Sysco, the world’s largest Food Distributor. Raina oversaw the logistics area domestic & international products destined for North America. Raina also co-led and implemented a Women’s Leadership Forum called IMPACT for Sysco’s corporate headquarters. Raina was formerly the Vice President of Transportation for Family Dollar tores, Inc. She was employed by the Dollar General Corporation as Sr. Director, Transportation Operations. Ms. Avalon currently serves on four Customer Advisory Boards in the Industry. She is an active member of RILA-Retail Industry Leaders Association, the CSCMP-the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals.
She serves on the Advisory Board for The Root Cause, a non-profit, works actively on the prevention of Human Trafficking, and served on the Board of Directors for the Girl Scouts Hornet’s Nest Council and as a Director on the Board for Seeds of Hope while in Charlotte, NC. Ms. Avalon earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from California State University at Los Angeles.
Chemu Lang’at serves as Senior Vice President and General Manager of Best Buy Health, a subsidiary of Best Buy dedicated to humanizing technology and empowering individuals to age independently and safely. In this role, she is responsible for setting the organization’s strategic direction, overseeing operational execution, and accountable for the business’s profit and loss performance.
Prior to joining Best Buy, Chemu was the Regional Head for Africa under Medtronic Labs, developing and scaling community-based, technology-enabled solutions for chronic disease management across East and West Africa in a social enterprise set-up. Chemu previously worked as a Principal Biomedical Engineer for Medtronic, as well as a Systems Safety & Reliability Engineer at NASA’s Johnson Space Center.
Chemu received her bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and Assistive Technology from Hampshire College, a master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from New Jersey Institute of Technology, and an executive MBA from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She serves on Best Buy Foundation’s and Splash International’s boards and is a strategic advisor for TIP Global Health. Chemu resides in Dallas, Texas, with her family, who share a passion for travel, sports, and exploring diverse culinary experiences.
With over 15 years of experience in healthcare consulting, advocacy, media and communication, and management, Jessica Najem brings a multidisciplinary approach to advancing health systems and impact-driven initiatives. She holds a PMP certification and two Master’s degrees, and has led high-impact projects across governments, UN agencies, humanitarian organizations, media and PR sectors, as well as private healthcare companies across the MENA region and beyond.
Jessica has a strong track record in driving improvements in healthcare access, quality, and system performance. Leveraging an extensive network of key stakeholders, KOLs, pharmaceutical and medical device companies, she specializes in value-based healthcare, AI and digital health, healthcare communication, environmental health, and governmental affairs.
Passionate about innovation, Jessica is committed to transforming healthcare systems through strategic collaboration, forward-thinking solutions, and impactful communication.
The consultant relations team serves as the strategic connection between TIAA and our valued consulting partners, orchestrating relationships that drive mutual success. Led by Jason, the team executes strategic growth plans, leveraging knowledge of market and industry trends, clients’ needs and preferences, as well as TIAA’s capabilities and solutions. As an integral part of our service model, Jason’s organization collaborates with our relationship management, sales and operations teams to deliver value and ensure a seamless experience for advisors and their firms. Through our collaborative approach, the consultant relations team strengthens existing partnerships while cultivating new opportunities that expand our shared book of business.
About Jason
As Managing Director and Head of Consultant Relations at TIAA, Jason leads strategic initiatives to enhance advisor support and expand opportunities in key markets, including education, healthcare, government and not-for-profit. He drives the organization’s vision for supporting consulting firms and record kept clients, leveraging more than two decades of defined contribution expertise. Prior to joining TIAA in 2024, Jason spent 22 years at Lincoln Financial, where he most recently served as Head of Consultant Relations for a decade. Throughout his career, he has helped institutional retirement
advisors and consultants deliver superior outcomes for their clients and plan participants.
Jasons proven track record includes successfully growing strategic and emerging markets through effective business development efforts. His areas of expertise span defined contribution and benefit plans, financial planning, key account relationship management, organizational strategy, and leadership. A graduate of North Carolina State University, Jason has obtained the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification and maintains FINRA Series 6, 7, and 63 registrations.
John has 45 years’ experience in the non-life insurance and reinsurance sector. A graduate of Cambridge University, he started his career at Willis and worked as a Lloyd’s broker from 1981 to 1995. From 1995 to 1997 he was Lloyd’s Head of Development for the Americas, and from 1997 to 2008 he was on the board of BMS Group, the international insurance and reinsurance broker, serving as Group Chief Executive from 2002 to 2008.
Since 2008 he has held a number of non-executive directorships and advisory roles in the insurance sector, including at Amwins Global Risks, Argo International, Ultimate Risk Solutions and Newline Group.
Currently he serves as non-executive chairman of Markel Syndicate Management Ltd, Markel International Insurance Company Ltd, Accelerant Insurance UK Ltd and Accelerant Insurance Europe SA. He is also a member of the Bain Advisor Network.

Bill Noble began his jewelry career in 1978, at iconic Neiman Marcus in Dallas, Texas, after he graduated magna cum laude from Texas Christian University with a B.A. in Business Administration. In 1982, he developed the concept for William Noble Jewels in the MBA program at Southern Methodist University, and further refined his concept in the Caruth School of Entrepreneurship at SMU.
Ricky Dickson is retired CEO and President of Blue Bell Creameries
Mr. Dickson began his career with Blue Bell on January 1, 1981, as a territory manager in Dallas, Texas. In 1982, he moved to Fort Worth to become sales manager and in 1984, was promoted to branch manager in San Antonio. He transferred to Oklahoma City and Tulsa when each of those branches opened.
In 1992, Mr. Dickson was named assistant Dallas/Fort Worth division manager. He transferred to Kansas City as branch manager in 1993 and returned to Tulsa later that year. In 1994, he was named Midwest division manager. Four years later, he became general manager of the Broken Arrow plant yet remained involved in sales, particularly with the Wal-Mart account. He was named general sales manager in 2003.
In 2010, he was appointed as vice president of sales and marketing and to serve as a director on the Blue Bell Board of Directors. In 2017, he was promoted to president, and in 2019, he was elected CEO and president of the Company.
After 43 years of service, Mr. Dickson retired from Blue Bell in March of 2024. Dickson has always been involved in community organizations and continues to do so. While living in Oklahoma, he served two terms on the Broken Arrow Chamber of Commerce board of directors. He has been a Rotarian since 1990, was named a Paul Harris Fellow in 2009 and is past president of the Rotary Club of Washington County.
Mr. Dickson was president of Faith Mission from 2009 – 2022, a local ecumenical Christian-based non-profit organization created to assist the homeless and working poor in the community and has been involved with the organization since 2006. Dickson was chairman of the Dairy Products Institute of Texas board from 2021-2023 and served as Ice Cream Board chair for the International Dairy Food Association in 2021-2023. He was ordained as a deacon at the First Baptist Church in San Antonio in 1987 and was chair of deacons at Central Baptist Church in Bryan, Texas in 2022.
Mr. Dickson earned his BBA in Marketing and Business Journalism at Baylor University in December,1980. He currently serves on the Supply Chain Management Advisory Council at Baylor as well as the Baylor Hankamer School of Business Advisory Board. He and his wife also have an Endowed Scholarship established at Baylor University’s Hankamer School of Business. Dickson currently serves on the Oklahoma Baptist University Business School Board of Executives.
Mr. Dickson and his wife Anita have five children and eight grandchildren. They attend Together We Church in Yukon, OK.
Sasha Hibbard is a strategic marketing leader with over 10 years of experience driving growth and transformation across the healthcare and technology sectors. As Vice President of Marketing at Smile Doctors, the nation’s largest orthodontic-focused support organization, she leads marketing strategy for a network of over 500 practices.
Her career includes leadership and consulting roles at LightForce Orthodontics, Align Technology, and Ernst & Young, where she helped organizations connect innovation with process improvement, change management, and operational excellence. A graduate of the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, Sasha studied Public Health and Health Administration, laying the foundation for her commitment to advancing access to personalized care for patients.
Sasha and her husband live in McKinney, Texas, with their two dogs and enjoy traveling and exploring new places together.
Jaime Campbell is the founder of Jaime Allison LLC, where she advises leaders and organizations in the areas of brand strategy, communication, leadership development, and organizational culture. Known for her ability to bring clarity and cohesion to complex initiatives, Jaime works at the intersection of strategy, storytelling, and human connection.
Her professional background spans more than twenty years across ministry leadership, luxury estate management, and entrepreneurship—giving her a uniquely holistic perspective on leadership, operational excellence, and relational stewardship. She holds a Master of Arts in Theology from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and a Bachelor of Arts from James Madison University.
In addition to her professional work, Jaime and her family are passionate about fostering cross-cultural relationships, strengthening communities, and helping steward influence with integrity and purpose. She has contributed to mission-driven and internationally focused initiatives in the Washington, DC area spanning business, faith, and humanitarian engagement.
After graduating from Samford University, Parker got his professional start in the UK at BMS Group, Ltd., a designated Lloyd’s of London reinsurance brokerage firm. From London, he moved to Charlotte, NC where he began sales and marketing work with J. Arthur Dail, Inc., an employee benefits brokerage firm that works with mid to large size corporations helping them develop customized benefits plans for their specific company needs.
This led to Parker being a founder of Corporate Health Strategies, LLC in 2005, which works with mid to large self-insured corporations helping them develop effective chronic disease management programs, with an emphasis on diabetes, designed to both improve quality of life for the employees and significantly lower health care costs for the employer.
After a dramatic life change that led to Parker completing his Master’s Degree at Dallas Theological Seminary, he launched The Root Cause in response to the epidemic of diabetes being experienced around the world.
When not focused on helping communities around the world identify and manage chronic disease, Parker enjoys spending time with his wife, Brandy, and their 3 children.
Brad completed his undergraduate business degree at the University of Georgia. He has since gone on to start, grow and sell numerous ventures in the business sector. Brad has been involved with The Root Cause since 2012 as a consultant and advisory board member, which made him a natural fit to step in as Chief Development Officer. Brad’s unique understanding of the organization and his real world approach will be vital to developing and implementing strategies as The Root Cause expands into new cities and countries around the World.
Brad, his wife Jessica and their two sons split time between Atlanta, GA and the family farm in Central Alabama.
Jon is an accomplished 4x technology VP of Sales and the Founder of Align Advisory Group, where he helps small businesses build proven, scalable sales functions to drive sustainable growth. With over 16 years of experience in go-to-market (GTM) strategy and execution, Jon is a seasoned sales consultant, advisor, and fractional executive. He specializes in leveraging proven frameworks to deliver transformative results and is passionate about fostering winning cultures and leading high-performing teams.
Jon is also honored to serve on the board of The Root Cause, an organization that brings healing and hope to underserved people around the world through diabetes and chronic disease management programs. His involvement reflects his passion for making a lasting impact in the lives of people and helping those in need.
Outside of his professional endeavors, Jon enjoys spending time with his wife, Laurion, and their four daughters, playing golf, coaching lacrosse, cheering for Ohio State football, and serving at his church and with YoungLife.
Andrea Barger is a strategic marketing and communications advisor with over two decades of experience helping people rediscover the heart of their stories. As the founder of FlintSpark Communications, she edits messages that obscure the truth, pursuing clarity on behalf of global brands, leaders, nonprofits, and businesses.
Her career encompasses a mix of in-house and agency roles, during which she has helped more than 10 CEOs refine their voice, deliver engaging keynotes, and communicate effectively through crises. Most recently, she served as the General Manager of Texas for The Bliss Group. At Snagajob, she anticipated the intersection of COVID-19 and hourly work, leading the development of a job-impact data hub widely adopted by national media and Fortune 500 employers. She also partnered with the Yale Center for Customer Insights to research the behavioral economics of job seekers and led the company’s brand transformation.
At Blucora, she managed communications for a multi‑billion‑dollar acquisition. Earlier, at Red Bull, she produced Emmy-submitted content, a nationally syndicated sports series, and 3,700 earned-media and social stories. She began her career at CNN, Disney, Weber Shandwick, and Golin and is a graduate of Baylor University.
Andrea serves on the boards of organizations that address local and global challenges while sharing the saving grace of Jesus Christ. Her role with The Root Cause includes advising on story strategy and content creation to bring the organization’s work to life and ignite interest and passion among current and expanding audiences.
Andrea shares her life with her husband, Michael, and their two young daughters. The Bargers reside in Dallas, TX.
John is a nationally recognized, award-winning C-suite executive, board director and advisor with a track record of accelerating growth for companies in the retail, restaurant, hospitality, sports & entertainment, and non-profit sectors. His combination of leadership experience across business, education and non-profit entities will add to the momentum of The Root Cause as it enters its next phase of growth.
John currently serves as President of la Madeleine Bakery & Cafe, a fast casual restaurant brand with nearly 100 cafes across the United States, with aggressive growth plans both domestically and internationally. Prior to la Madeleine, John served as Chief Marketing Officer, Chief Brand Officer, and ultimately President of the 1,600-unit restaurant chain, Denny’s, where he led a significant turnaround in the brand’s revenue and profit growth. He also led similar business and consumer loyalty turnarounds during his tenures with the National Basketball Association, Yum Brands (Pizza Hut), and PepsiCo. John also is the founder of HMS Growth Partners, a consulting/advisory firm working with leaders and brands across multiple categories building from the unique combination of consumer, franchise and both public and private sectors.
John serves on the boards of Baylor’s University’s Hankamer Business School, where he also recently served as its very first Executive in Residence. He created an endowment for Baylor’s Women in Business initiative, where he also sits on the advisory board and also serves on the Board of Directors for the Texas chapter of Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF). On the corporate side, he has served multiple years on the Association of National Advertisers (ANA) Board of Directors, advisory board for Adweek, and for multiple years chaired the ANA’s Alliance for Inclusive & Multicultural Marketing. He also serves multiple businesses in senior advisory capacities, ranging from AI and data-driven technology start-ups to consumer/retail brands to charitable organizations.
John is a mentor and frequent speaker across industries on multiple topics including innovation, branding, business growth, and leadership. He has won numerous awards for his business impact including Forbes’ Top 50 Most Innovative CMOs, Business Insider’s World’s Best CMOs, PRWeek’s Power 50, Adweek’s 50 Best Leaders, Nation’s Restaurant News’ Power 50 and Adage’s Media Maven award.
John holds a BBA from Baylor University and continuing education certification from Harvard University. He and his wife Elisha are the proud parents of three daughters and reside in Plano, Texas.
Camelia Lopez Shoemaker is a partner with Holland & Knight, LLP in Dallas. Her legal practice focuses on complex litigation, cybersecurity and white collar defense and investigations. Camelia previously served in the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training as the sole global attorney advisor for dark web and cryptocurrency matters. In that role, she advised and delivered knowledge regarding cyber investigations and cryptocurrency matters in the U.S. and to foreign law enforcement agencies across sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America. Previously, Camelia spent 15 years with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Texas, where she held leadership roles, including senior counselor to the U.S. attorney, senior litigation counsel and attorney in charge of the Plano branch office. While there, she focused on computer hacking, intellectual property and national security, setting policy and guiding high-profile prosecutions, including landmark cases in cybercrime and terrorism.
With more than two decades of experience in the prosecution of complex criminal matters and civil cases in federal and state courts, in addition to extensive foreign and domestic public engagement, Camelia is recognized for her leadership in the courtroom as well as her extensive knowledge and skill regarding cyber threats, national security, and public-private partnerships.
In addition to her professional endeavors, Camelia has enjoyed serving her community as a volunteer with the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas and Watermark Community Church and presently serves on the Boards of the Dallas Children’s Theater and New Friends New Life. She and her husband, Ted, live in Dallas with their two children and dog, Millie.
Wanjiru is an Akili Dada alumna fellow class of 2014, a college graduate. She has a wealth of experience in the field of project management, healthcare, and education/rehabilitation, having worked in different organizations in various capacities over the last 10 years. She is also a column writer for Ability Africa Magazine.
Her immediate former employer was Ubuntu Life Foundation, a nonprofit social enterprise. While there, she was vocal on advocacy and inclusion. She has also been featured on both TV stations and print media for her work in the community.
During her free time, Wanjiru spends time with her family and friends and enjoys traveling. She also spends a great deal of time with her grandmother who is diabetic; she has learned a lot when it comes to diabetes management and she is keen on helping people receive the care they need to live more abundant lives.
Dr. Atei Kerochi, is a Public health specialist, epidemiologist and capacity building expert with extensive experience in multi-sectoral project design, management, monitoring and evaluation, project assessments and research skills in the health sector spanning over 25 years. He is a graduate of University of Nairobi where he did his degree in medicine and later Masters in Public Health from University of Liverpool.
He has worked both as a consultant and in senior management positions in various local and international humanitarian organizations in different countries of Africa. He has substantial experience in working with rural communities in Africa. His humanitarian work took him to Tanzania, Uganda, Sudan and Somalia where he participated in complex emergencies as a UN team member. He has special interest in disease prevention, health promotion and quality health care. Currently, he is a lecturer at School of Public Health, Mount Kenya university and part-time lecturer at Jomo Kenyatta University of agriculture and technology.
The Root Cause is a nonprofit Christian Health Ministry focused on sustainably improving the quality and quantity of life for those affected by chronic illness living in rural, underserved areas.
By training and deploying neighbors as local caregivers, we identify and address specific social, spiritual and medical determinants that will improve health and impact outcomes.
